Mixed Messages In Advertising

I think this ad about Aids does a great job of raising awareness of guns. Which is not the point.

It shows how easy it is to get a gun, hide one in your purse, even practice your macho man shooting style in the mirror.

Then it makes a screeching segue to Aids testing and how we all have a weapon to eliminate it.

All it left me thinking, was that Aids isn’t as deadly as guns.

It feels like this was a clever execution that got carried away with itself and lost the message along the way.

  1. Hmmm – I quite like this, apart from the ending. I read it as Aids sufferers having a weapon as powerful as a gun – i.e. Aids. Agree that the awkward segue into the Aids test thing doesn’t work well though – perhaps more could have been made of “disarming” through having a test?

    1. I think that would be a stonger message. My first impression was also that Aids is a lethal weapon. That’s simple and might have made a connection. However the ad copy talks about there being a powerful weapon to eliminage Aids, which is 2 steps away from the visual images and makes it really hard to remember the point. Thanks for writing Ross, you always have an interesting perspective.
